Artist Yee Soohyun's paintings explore the inherent value of life and her profound connection to the varied human experience.

The artist believes that for imperfect individuals to truly belong and integrate into society, forming relationships is essential. Recognizing her own imperfections, she has experienced a full spectrum of emotions—joy, sorrow, anger, and pleasure—while connecting with others. These feelings have since become symbolized in her art by the varying sizes and numbers of dots. Acknowledging human imperfection, she expands this awareness to embrace the inherent value of every life. In her artwork, the dots adhere to a specific arrangement (symbolizing individual values) yet display diverse shapes, sizes, and forms (reflecting unique personalities), harmoniously converging to form a unified pattern. Through these very dots, the artist beautifully conveys her love and respect for diverse lives.

From 2011 to 2021, Lee primarily worked with oil and acrylic. In 2024, however, she embarked on a new exploration, incorporating decorative jewels such as Swarovski crystals into her art. This pivotal experience awakened a profound yearning for the essence of her artistic practice, marking a significant turning point.

Title “Brilliant and Elegant like Starlight,“ this exhibition visualizes the unseen textures of emotion through a restrained black-and-white language. It encapsulates the artist’s journey in seeking the essence of self and love. Within the simplicity of its lines and negative space, profound contemplation and emotion are embedded, as lines gracefully traversing the paper delicately reveal the subtle nuances of feeling. This exhibition explores the universal theme of love through a restrained black-and-white aesthetic. Using the artist's delicate expressions, it visualizes layers of emotion and invites viewers to reflect on these subtle currents, discovering the 'starlight' within their own hearts.

이수현 작가는 삶의 소중함과 각기 다른 삶에 대한 애정을 그림을 통해 표현합니다.

불완전한 인간이 사회에 스며들어 그 일원이 되기 위해서는 ‘관계 맺기’가 필연적이라 여긴 작가는, 자신 또한 불완전한 존재임을 자각하며 여러 사람들과 관계를 맺는 과정속에서 환희, 기쁨, 슬픔, 분노 등 희로애락(喜怒哀樂)의 감정을 경험하였고, 이러한 감정들은 점의 크기와 개수로 상징화하기 시작했습니다.

작가는 인간의 불완전함을 자각하면서, 그 시선을 모든 이의 삶의 소중함으로 확장해 나갔고, 작품 속 점들은 일정한 배열(각자의 가치관)을 따르면서도, 작품마다 다른 모양과 크기, 형태(각자의 개성)로 서로 조화를 이루어 하나의 무늬를 형성합니다. 작가는 각기 다른 삶에 대한 애정과 존중을 이 점들 속에 담아냅니다.

2011년부터 2021년까지는 오일과 아크릴을 주재료로 작업해왔으며, 2024년에는 스와로브스키 등의 장식용 보석을 매체로 새로운 시도를 하였습니다. 이 경험을 통해 본질에 대한 갈망을 자각하게 되었고, 의미있는 전환점이 되었습니다.

이번 전시 《별빛처럼 찬란하고 우아한》展에서는 절제된 흑백의 언어로 보이지 않는 감정의 결을 시각화하며, 작가가 자신과 사랑의 본질을 찾아가는 여정을 담아냅니다. 색을 덜어낸 선과 여백 속에는 깊은 사유와 감정이 깃들어 있으며, 종이 위를 유영하는 선들은 감정의 미묘한 결을 섬세하게 드러냅니다. 사랑이라는 보편적 주제를 절제된 흑백 미학으로 풀어낸 이번 전시는, 작가의 섬세한 표현을 통해 감정의 층위를 시각화하고, 관람자에게는 그 흐름을 따라 각자의 내면에 자리한 ‘별빛’을 발견하는 사유의 시간을 제공합니다.

Artist Statement

저는 정성스럽고 다정한 사랑 속에서 자랐습니다. 부모님은 매일 아침, 서로를 향한 따뜻한 칭찬 한마디로 하루를 시작하셨고, 어떻게 하면 더 사랑할 수 있을지를 함께 고민하며 살아오셨습니다. 그런 환경에서 자라면서 사랑은 저에게 단순한 감정이 아니라 지켜야 할 삶의 태도이자, 끝까지 품어야 할 믿음이라는 것을 배웠습니다.​ 사랑이란, 선택된 관계 안에서 깊이 응시하고, 그 존재를 더욱 투명하게 바라보려는 지속적인 노력입니다. 저는 그 노력의 흔적을 점, 선과 여백으로 남기는 사람입니다. 제게 사랑은 흔하지 않은 것이지만, 한 번 시작되면 결코 가볍지 않습니다. 그 감정은 조용하지만 깊고, 우아하지만 단단하며, 찬란하지만 결코 요란하지 않습니다. 마치 별빛처럼—멀리서도 또렷하고, 오래도록 흔들림 없는 빛. 보이지 않는 감정의 결이 시간과 마음을 통과해 도달하는 방식으로 존재합니다. 저는 그 사랑의 결을 색을 덜어낸 흑백의 드로잉으로 기록합니다. 점, 선이 머문 자리엔 숨결이 있고, 여백에는 말 없는 그리움이 남아 있습니다. 사랑은 표현되기 전부터 이미 존재하고 있었던 것. 그 진실을 믿기에, 저는 오늘도 손을 움직여 그 감정을 재확인합니다. 하지만 저는 흔들리지 않습니다. 다정함은 진심의 강도이며, 지속성은 사랑의 품격이라는 제 신념은 변하지 않을 것입니다. 예술은 저에게 그 사랑의 신념을 구체화하는 언어입니다. 감정은 저마다 다르지만, 진심은 전해질 수 있다고 믿기에 저는 묵묵히, 꾸준히, 저만의 방식으로 사랑을 그립니다. 저의 작업은 감정의 외화가 아닌 내면의 구조를 시각화하는 행위이며, 기억과 감각을 언어로 바꾸는, 지극히 조용한 선언입니다. 그리고 저는 믿습니다. 모두가 결국엔 솔직하고 열렬한 사랑을 기원하고 있다는 것을. 그 바람이, 언젠가 누군가에게 별빛처럼 닿을 수 있기를. - 이수현 2025
