‘No Longer Myself’
My true freedom does not mean physical freedom from pain that is caused by actions against the restrictions of other persons in the general living environment. It implies outputs which result from horizontal correlations accompanied by resistance and angry arising from habitual self-restrictions, as well as from inner conflicts between the observer(self) and object(image).
Methods for achieving the consequent freedom can be found only within myself, and hence exhaustive self-exploitation must be inevitably required based on these actions. Freedom resulting from self-exploitation provides greater intrinsic freedom than physical freedom that comes from environment or other people because the exploiter is just the exploited party.
While the condensed conflict between the observer and object in my works is naturally accepted in the intact condition, I voluntarily become the object of an image and try to resolve the conflict through the artistic method of works. The conflict is expressed in a formative manner by adding regular and irregular patterns to images, to prove human imperfection, and it aims to accept the conflict arising from imperfection, rather than longing for perfect life.
After continuously repeating to spray, paint and add pigments on Hanji, traditional Korean paper and then to pick and remove them using a tattoo needle, the self-exploitation is maximized by extreme patience. Namely, the labor exploitation expressed externally by expelling me to the extreme end is the freest method for expressing resistance and anger using works. Exhaustive self-exploitation makes it possible for myself to gradually ceases to exist in the process of working so that simultaneously my artistic works can be created. “더 이상 내가 아니다”
내가 갈망하는 자유로움은 보편적 삶의 환경에서 타인의 속박에 반하는 행위에 수반되는, 고통으로부터의 물리적 자유에서 기인하지 않는다. 관찰자(자아)와 대상(화면)의 내면적 갈등 관계와 습관적 자기구속으로부터 저항과 분노를 동반하는 수평적인 상관관계에서 발생되는 결과물인 것이다.
자유라는 결과를 얻기 위한 수단은 오직 나에게서 발견할 수 있으며 그렇기에 모든 행위의 바탕에 철저한 자기 착취가 있지 않으면 안된다. 자기 자신을 착취하면서 비롯되는 자유로움은 타인이나 환경으로부터의 물리적 자유보다 온전한 자유를 부여한다. 착취자가 곧 피착취자이기 때문이다.
나의 작품들 속 관찰자와 대상의 응집된 갈등을 그대로 자연스럽게 수용한 채 작가 스스로가 화면의 대상이 되어 작품 제작 방식을 통해 갈등을 풀어내려고 한다. 인간의 불완전성을 증명하기 위해 화면에 규칙적, 불규칙적인 패턴을 입혀 조형적 언어로 표현하였고, 이는 삶의 완전성에 대한 갈망보다 외려 불완전성에서 발생되는 갈등을 받아들인 형태이다.
한지 위에 안료를 뿌리며 칠하고 덮고를 수 없이 반복 한 후, 이를 타투 바늘로 뜯어내는 방식을 되풀이함으로써 지독한 인내로 자기 착취를 극대화시키고 있다. 즉, 정신적 착취로 자기 자신을 극단으로 내몰아 외부로 표출되는 노동 착취는 작품을 통해 저항과 분노를 표현 하는 가장 자유로운 표현 방식인 것이다. 작품 제작 과정에서 철저한 자기 착취를 통해 자기 자신을 서서히 소멸시키고, 그와 동시에 작품으로 생성되는 것으로 자기 자신에게서 벗어남으로써 비로소 진정한 자유로움을 만나게 된다. - 2019 정병현
