‘The Flesh of Passage ’
Historically in Asia, a sword has been associated with human desire, being an auspicious object belonging to an aristocrat. Throughout history, it has become an icon of power. During the past 10 years, I have endeavored to analyze the historical context of the sword in human civilization. My works have been efforts to reveal the futility of human desires through the manifestation of swords in various visual vocabularies.
I started my process of converting the materiality of the sword into historical context by using ceramics. Ceramics was an ideal vehicle for formal expressions and practices, however I faced the limitation in transcending the text and context of a sword using this medium. I then turned to salt, which charmed me with its visual manifestation of its sensual materiality. The symbolic aspect also fascinated me; salt has symbolic images of wealth, power, religiousness, and life that are parallel to the nature of human desires.
After ten year of using the sword as a subject matter, I search for new ideas and changes. I am now pursuing formal changes and metaphorical expressions using the form of flowers. To me, a flower as a sexual organ means the origin of a life and is a core of desires hidden under its brilliance. In that aspect, a flower and sword are sharing a similar nature within them. I can therefore describe that the conceptual aspect of my most recent work is similar to that of my past works.
In order to avoid conventional images that using representational objects might cause and hence compromise metaphorical expressions within them, I used my imagination to create the forms. '시간의 살'
검(劍)의 절대 권력성에서 꽃의 심상(心狀)으로
검은 문명(文明)이다.
예로부터 동양에서는 검은 권력의 상징이자 인간욕망의 역사적 실체였다. 또한 절대 권력자의 신성한 물건이기도 했으며, 이를 통하여 인간적 욕망의 정점으로 자리를 매김 하였는데, 나는 지난 10년 동안 검의 본질적 속성을 재해석하는 과정에 주력해 왔다. 나는 이를 통하여 인간욕망의 허무한 관념적 실체를 시각적 대상물로 언어화하고자 하였다.
재료적 출발점은 세라믹이었는데, 이는 물성의 이중치환을 통해서 검의 원초적 속성을 희석 시키며 주관적 개념의 대상물로 다루는데 유용하다고 보았기 때문이다. 하지만 현존하는 유물 같은 완벽함에 근접하면서도, 보다 디자인화되고 박제된 유물의 형식인 청동 검은 시각적으로 보편화된 언어를 벗어나기가 힘든 소재였기에, 결과적으로는 조형훈련의 일환으로 작업을 접근했다는 것이 지난 작업 과정을 되돌아보는 나의 소회이다. 이런 반성적 성찰에서 청동 검을 재해석하는 방법론적 차원이나 개념적 접근의 측면이 보편적 형식의 벽을 허물기에는 한계에 왔다는 점에서 다시금 재료의 전환을 모색하였다.
새롭게 선택한 재료는 소금인데, 소금이 내포하고 있는 부와 권력, 종교성, 생명에 관한 상징성은 인간욕망의 본질과도 평행선상을 이루고 있다는 측면에서, 시각적으로 보여지는 감각적인 물성이 나를 매료 시키기에 충분했다. 소금 검을 작업으로 검에 관한 작업이 어느 정도 마무리되었다는 자각에 이르면서 지난 10년 여정의 검 작업을 정리하고 새로운 조형적 변신을 고심한 결과, 현재는 꽃이라는 유기체를 통해서 형식의 변화와 아울러 은유적인 접근을 시도하는 것으로 나아가고 있다.
나는 꽃은 곧 생명의 근원적인 출발점인 생식기와 다름없는 존재라고 본다.
검과 꽃 두 소재가 서로 상이한 듯 보이지만, 어떤 측면에서는 이 양자가 내포한 언어성은 같은 동심원상에 있다고 보고 있는데, 그것은 검의 형식에서 보여주는 직접적이고 보편적인 속성과 꽃의 화려함 속에 교묘하게 감추어진 본질적인 욕망은 서로 관통하는 점이 있다고 보기 때문이다. 새로운 형식의 전환이 이루어 지고 있을 뿐, 내용적으로는 개념적 유사성을 담보하고 있는 작업이라고 할 수 있다. 은유적 접근방식이 형식의 보편성에 함몰하는 오류를 비켜가기 위해 존재하는 직접 대상물을 소재로 선택하지 않고 심상적 구조로 표현하고자 하고 있으며, 이는 뒤집어 말하면 “심상적 꽃” 이라는 유기체에 지난 작업에서 추구했던 검의 형식 속에 담지(擔持)하고자 했던 개념의 새로운 변주로 이해될 수 있을 것이다. - 최정윤, 2014
