EXISTENCE - KOREA
The works in the exhibition, “EXISTENCE – KOREA”, reflects the artists’ dialogue with his surroundings. The Dutch artist Rene Rietmeyer expresses his subjective personal relationship to Korea and several other parts of the world. His works do this with the use of shape, color, texture, composition and his choice of material.
By placing paint on paper, wood or metal, or by using simply a colored material itself, Rietmeyer expresses his relationship to his surroundings. His works are mostly executed with oil paint, colors, applied by brush or palette knife, depending upon the series, in many layers or spread in thick coats. The artist sees his work not as painted pictures in a conventional sense, he sees himself rather as a constructor of objects than as a painter.
Rietmeyer states that; “The confrontation with your own existence as a human in relation to your own surroundings teaches you many things about priorities and values in life. The communication with other people, either directly or through my work, allows me to make known my thoughts and my presence as a person. But, ultimately, my work is nothing other than the proof of my existence. Not much different than the 30,000-year-old handprint of the painter in the Chauvet cave in France.”
My works do not simply reproduce visual representational images of a subject. The emotionality and subjectivity of my concept are an expression of my own existence and personality. I create an atmosphere that mirrors my very personal subjective thoughts about the subject.
My Boxes create an atmosphere. They transport my emotional and intellectual relationship with the subject using form, color, texture, composition and a conscious choice of the material. Whether my work is visually attractive or not, is not relevant. My objects mirror my thoughts concerning life and thereby, at the same time, also say something about me, my life, regardless whether the result is aesthetically attractive or not.
My work is therefore more than just an abstract reproduction of perceptions; it includes my reflections, my existence as a human being, as well. The dialogue with my own works heightens also my own awareness of my existence as part of this world. It is an encounter with myself, with me as a person, with my past and my reflections. “Time-Space-Existence” are for me increasingly conscious and important factors.
With my ongoing personal development, my awareness concerning life is growing and the confrontation with questions about life itself and my own existence, are taking on increasing importance. The expression of my “here and now” exists in all of my works but especially the Boxes of the series LIFE express my very conscious experiencing of life itself.
The confrontation with your own existence as a human being in relation to your own surroundings teaches you many things about priorities and values in life. 이번 전시 'EXISTENCE - KOREA'에서 소개되는 작품들은 작가와 주변 환경의 대화를 반영합니다. 네덜란드 작가 르네 리트마이어(Rene Rietmeyer)는 한국, 그리고 세계 여러 지역에서 느낀 주관적이며 개인적인 관계를 표현합니다. 그의 작품들은 그가 선택하는 재료의 모양, 색상, 질감, 구성을 통해 이를 나타냅니다.
리트마이어는 종이, 나무, 금속에 물가을 칠하거나 단순히 색칠한 재료를 사용하여 주변 환경과의 관계를 표현합니다. 그의 작품들은 주로 유채로, 붓이나 팔레트 나이프를 사용하여 제작되고, 시리즈에 따라 여러겹으로 칠하거나 두껍게 바릅니다. 리트마이어는 자신의 작품을 전통적인 의미로 그려진 그림으로 보지 않고, 자신을 화가로서보다는 사물(object)을 만들어내는 제작자로 생각합니다.

내 작품들은 단순히 피사체(대상)의 시각적인 이미지를 재현하는 것이 아닙니다. 나의 감성과 주관성은 나 자신의 존재와 개성을 표현합니다. 나는 어떤 사안에 대해 매우 개인적이고 주관적인 생각을 반영하는 분위기를 만들어 냅니다.
내 박스들은 각각의 분위기를 가집니다. 그것들은 형태, 색, 질감, 구성, 그리고 의식적인 재료의 선택을 통해 어떤 피사체(대상)와의 감성적이고 지적인 관계를 전달합니다. 내 작품이 시각적으로 매력적인지 아닌지는 상관없습니다. 나의 오브젝트들은 삶에 대한 나의 생각을 반영하며, 동시에, 그 결과가 미적으로 매력적이든 아니든 상관없이, 나와 내 삶에 대한 무엇인가를 말해줍니다.
그러므로 내 작품은 단순한 인식의 추상적 재현 그 이상입니다. 그것은 나의 성찰, 인간으로서의 나의 존재도 포함됩니다. 내 작품과의 대화는 또한 이 세상의 일부로서 내 존재에 대한 나 자신의 인식을 높인다. 이것은 나 자신과의 만남이고, 한 인간으로서, 나 자신의 과거와 그때의 내 모습들(reflections)과 마주하는 것입니다. "시간-공간-존재"는 나에게 점점 더 의식적이고 중요한 요소가 됩니다.

Born in 1957 in ’s-Hertogenbo sch, The Netherlands. After studying psychology in Innsbruck, (Austria), he was the founding director of a private art academy in Greece. Since 1994, he has been concentrating solely on being an artist, which to that point he had only been able to do on the side. From 1994 until now, numerous travels and longer stays in Japan, Germany, Canada, France, Ireland, The Netherlands and the USA, among other places.
After a phase of figurative painting while becoming acquainted with the work of fauvist artists, Rietmeyer developed in Southern France from 1997 on his own art form of the “Boxes”, stimulated by his getting to know American minimal art and the so-called new abstraction. The boxes are three-dimensional objects, most often painted on five sides, which are presented on the wall or on the floor in multi-part, variable installations. Although he works with many various materials, such as concrete, metal, glass, silicone and glue, nevertheless, oil paint remains his preferred material. Departing from the conviction that even a minimalist approach cannot produce a completely depersonalized, “objective” work of art free of emotion, Rietmeyer, with these Boxes (and since 1998, also with his “Objects on Paper”), dedicates himself to the task of making visible the subjectively felt effect of cities and landscapes. This comes about with the purely abstract formal means of color, form, material, surface structure, composition and the installation in space. Rietmeyer has been using his concept in his portrait series for the subjective experience of meetings with certain persons as well.
