Artist CHEON(b. 1985, Daegu) has been developing a unique artistic language based on the memories of his personal experiences. The exhibition 'Guardian Angel' presents artwork and the act of creating it, metaphorically compared to a ‘guardian angel,’ presenting the creative world of artist CHEON, who protects himself through his painting.
Cheon’s artistic practice is spontaneous and intuitive. Not limited to flowers, but including portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and anything else, Cheon paints his own experiences. These experiences are based on memories that he has selected, and the criteria for those selections are solely determined by the artist. He experiences, feels emotions, recalls those emotions, and these memories are materialized not through conventional representation, but through the artist’s own approach. The process of creation is intuitive and instinctive, embodying a profound, intrinsic desire for painting.The painting acts as both an outpouring and a form of liberation from oppression for the artist, who states, 'Painting may be the process of paint mixing and flowing on the canvas, but, in essence, it is the artist's body, and that in itself is painting.' He further expresses, 'I wanted to paint painting itself.' This reflects the artist's view of painting not merely as a tool for creation, but as a medium for thought and communication, wherein his existence and expression are embodied within the painting itself. In this exhibition, the artist compares the act of painting and its outcome to a ‘Guardian Angel,’ explaining that for him, painting serves as both an outlet and a form of liberation from repression. He hopes, however, that the viewers of this exhibition will receive it warmly.

I have painted many works.
The brushstrokes of the paintings piled up in my studio float around,coming to me like a friend.
The painting is the flesh and skin of reality, while the world feels surreal.
If there is a god, I thought that God is with me.
기억된 자신의 경험을 바탕으로 자신만의 화법을 구축해오고 있는 채온(b.1985, 대구) 작가의 ‘Guardian Angel(수호천사)‘展에서는 작품과 작업을 하는 행위 자체를 자신을 지켜주는 ‘수호천사’에 빗대며 그림으로 스스로를 지켜내고 있는 채온 작가의 작업 세계를 소개합니다.
인물, 풍경, 정물 등 다양한 주제를 그린다는 채온 작가는 자신의 경험을 그립니다. 그 경험들은 작가가 선택한 기억에 바탕을 두고 있으며, 그 선택은 오직 작가에게 달려있습니다. 경험을 하고, 감정을 느끼고, 그 감정을 기억하며, 그 기억은 재현의 방식이 아닌, 작가만의 방식으로 구체화됩니다. 그 작업과정은 직관적이고 본능적이며 회화에 대한 깊은 욕망의 발로이기도 합니다. 그림은 자신에게 억압으로부터의 분출이자 해방이라는 작가는 "회화란 화면 위에 물감이 뒤섞여 흘러내리는 과정일 수 있지만, 그것은 바로 화가의 몸이며, 그 자체가 회화"라며 "회화를 회화하고 싶었다"고 말합니다. 이는 작가가 회화를 단순히 창작 도구가 아니라 사유와 소통의 수단으로 보고 회화 그 자체로 자신의 존재와 표현을 담고 있습니다. 이번 전시에서 채온 작가는 그림을 그리는 행위와 결과물이 ‘수호천사’와 같은 존재임을 이야기하며, 작품을 보는 이들에게 따뜻하게 받아들여지기를 바란다고 전합니다.

작업실에 쌓인 그림들의 붓질은 둥둥 떠다니며 친구처럼 다가왔다.
그림은 현실의 살이고 피부다. 그리고 세계는 비현실적이다.
